Get Ahead of Eye Disease

Unfortunately, many diseases can compromise both your vision and eye health. At Claresholm Eye Care, we do everything we can to detect, manage, and treat a range of eye diseases. We have the expertise and the technology required to help ensure your eyes stay healthy, and your vision remains clear.

Comprehensive annual eye exams play a vital role in the detection of eye disease and other vision problems. Some serious conditions don’t begin to exhibit symptoms until they have already caused permanent vision loss or even blindness.

Common Eye Diseases

Glaucoma is a serious eye disease and one of the leading causes of blindness in Canada.

This condition is generally caused by a buildup of excess fluid in the front part of the eye that cannot properly drain, increasing your eye’s internal pressure and damaging the optic nerve (which is responsible for relaying visual information from the eyes to the brain).

However, in some cases, glaucoma can develop even when your eye’s internal pressure is normal, a condition called normal-tension glaucoma.

Diabetes can increase your chance of developing glaucoma. That’s just one of the many reasons patients with diabetes should undergo annual diabetic eye exams.

Cataracts are a natural part of the ageing process and form when the proteins in our eyes’ natural lenses become cloudy and opaque. Symptoms of cataracts include a milky, opaque texture coupled with blurry vision that can’t be corrected with glasses or contact lenses. Cataracts can be removed through surgery. Cataract surgery is a minimally invasive, painless procedure with a short recovery time that involves removing your clouded natural lens and replacing it with a clear artificial lens.

AMD is a condition that occurs when the macula, the central portion of the retina, degenerates, usually due to age. As the disease progresses, the central vision becomes blurry and is gradually lost.

AMD may be painless, but that doesn’t make it any less serious. Studies have shown that AMD is the leading cause of blindness in adults over the age of 55 in North America. At Claresholm Eye Care, we will work with you to diagnose and manage your AMD symptoms and safeguard your eye health.

Diabetic retinopathy is a serious eye disease that can lead to blindness in patients with diabetes and is typically caused by uncontrolled blood sugar levels. These high blood sugar levels slowly damage the delicate blood vessels in the retina over time, causing them to swell and leak blood or other fluids, which cause retinal damage.

Our Technology

At Claresholm Eye Care, we the most cutting-edge diagnostic, imaging, and testing technology to care for our patients. These include:

Considered the gold standard intraocular pressure test (IOP) and the most widely accepted method of testing eye pressure in the eye care industry, this is an important device for testing and detecting glaucoma.

The Zeiss Clarus Retinal Camera captures high-resolution images of back of the eye, namely the retina and optic nerve. This allows us to better diagnose and detect diabetic retinopathy and a range of other eye diseases.

This machine scans the eye and uses light waves to produce cross-sectional images of the layers that make up the retina. This gives us a clear picture into any threats to the retina we should be concerned about.
